biddy picard
a life's work

Somewhere/nowhere in Penwith
24 x 24” 60 x 60cm acrylic on canvas

BIDDY PICARD, though born in Derbyshire in the early 1920’s, has spent the greater part of her adult life within a few miles of Penzance, in West Cornwall. Although college trained, Biddy never entered the mainstream as a professional artist like many of her contemporaries, preferring to remain on the fringe, involving herself with a variety of activities as she pleased. Nevertheless, Biddy’s many artistic creations - through printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics - have brought joy to many over the past 50 years. The small number of solo exhibitions that have taken place have been highly successful and her work has always been available through a number of select galleries.

Her work is simple, entertaining, enthralling and unpretentious. Her eye for nature and the landscape and her observations of people in their working and living environments give wonderful perspective on her adopted homeland in West Penwith. The range of work is immense - from her early strident abstracts to the more recent minimalist scenes of harbours and harbour folk, boats and fish, via bold landscapes and those see-all vistas from windows on to the world outside.

This exhibition looks back on “a life’s work”. As such, it brings together a unique collection of work in many forms which has never been seen before and is unlikely to be seen again. The items in this catalogue date from the late 1960’s to the early 2000’s and everything is for sale. Much of the collection has never been exhibited before. There are many other items of work in the exhibition, including stoneware sculptures and ceramics, though not all of these will be for sale.

To accompany this unique look at the lifetime output of Biddy Picard, we are publishing a commemorative book entitled, simply, “A Life’s Work”. For a preview please visit the on-line book shop.
