Neil Bolton was born in Suffolk in 1958. He studied at Ipswich School of Art, 1977-78 then Norwich School of Art, 1978-1981. For a number of years he worked as a member of the Art Department of Homerton College, Cambridge. Currently living in Ripon, Neil paints the British landscape and the human figure, exhibiting his work in a number of galleries.
I am interested in the influence on our sensibilities and the interaction between concentrated observation and instinctive response in paint. Working in the plein air tradition, I experience the landscape at first hand and use the medium of oil paint to make an image that can only be arrived at by painting outside, close to the motif.
The countryside of Cape Cornwall and its hinterlands with its ancient granite bones; the brooding melancholy of the abandoned mine workings and Bronze Age fields; washed by Atlantic rains then cast in brilliant light, all converging with the vitality of the sea in an elemental dialogue. This exerts a particular influence on me and provokes a necessity to attempt a synthesis of vision and paint. I hope the paintings reflect this influence and my life long love of the British landscape
Neil Bolton has worked closely on this Penwith Paintings project with fellow artist, Ian Shearman. Their respective paintings are being shown together in a two-man show.
