Great Atlantic Publications, the publishing arm of The Great Atlantic Galleries produces quality publications in cooperation with a number of its leading exhibiting artists. There are several reasons for doing this - books help to sell an artist's work, they raise the profile of both the artist and the gallery and they provide a permanent record of what would otherwise have been an ephemeral show. Publications also lend credibility to the process of promoting an artist's work and provide key information on the provenance of the artist and his or her work.

The process of buying an artist's work involves a subtle mix of desire and temptation on the one hand, caution, self-doubt, guilt and suspicion on the other. "Can I justify the cost?"; "Is the painting as good as it looks?"; "Am I being conned?" are questions never spoken but frequently muttered in the mind of the buyer.

Buyers and lovers of art who know the local scene, know the artists and have watched them, develop and flourish do not have these problems. However, visitors, or even more so, those who are tempted to buy from catalogues or web sites may face a dilemma. The Great Atlantic sends out 5000 catalogues every 2-3 weeks throughout the year, mainly to people not resident in West Cornwall. It is therefore imperative that we provide as much additional information about our artists as possible.

Buying and selling art involves two qualities over and above the physical and emotional aspects of the individual piece of work ie. size, shape, media, wow factor and, of course, price. These two qualities are Provenance and Credibility.

Provenance assures the source of the work and the pedigree or otherwise of the artist. In turn, it conveys Credibility, which is all about feeling comfortable that the artists is the real McCoy and not someone fortuitously, suddenly and just-last-week endowed with a superficial and ephemeral talent.

So, Great Atlantic Publications is all about providing Provenance and Credibility for artists, locally loved and respected, who are making those all important steps into a wider audience.

The following books are available from The Great Atlantic On-line Bookshop and in many cases we can provide you with a copy signed by the artist.
