Born to Cornish parents in 1964, John Brenton grew up in the China Clay valley of Nanpean near St. Austell. Ever since his first day at school, when his teacher congratulated him on a drawing he had made, he has worked to develop his creative talents. From St. Austell Sixth Form College, John progressed to an honours degree in creative arts from Alsager College - now part of Manchester University.

As with many of his peers, John’s post student years were spent in pursuit of respectable employment and coping with the responsibilities of marriage and parenthood. In 1995 he settled with his wife and two children in the West Cornwall village of Sennen, near Land’s End, where, under his father’s guidance, he built the family home.

Presently, as a full time artists who prefers to paint from life using oils, his efforts are directed towards meeting the challenge of painting the awe inspiring beauty of the Cornish coastline. Sky, sea, shore and how the light plays its magic - these are, of course, the inspirational symbols of many painters, but John tries for that extra dimension - “the given moment”. He begins his work at the spot that fires his interest and works quickly to capture as much as is fleetingly possible. After more work in his studio, he will return to that particular place to make the important final touches.

John Brenton has enjoyed solo shows at leading galleries in Fowey and St. Just-in-Penwith, Cornwall; Salcombe, Devon; Cheltenham and in the west end of London. His work has also been exhibited in Truro, Wimbledon, Richmond and at the Royal College of Art.

“The county in which I was born and raised has always been an inspiration. For me, painting is primarily about revealing and communicating the beauty of the landscape through a fine balance of technique and emotional interpretation. I am constantly directed towards capturing the changing effects of light reflected on the land and sea and the rendition of emergent colours and shapes.”
