“Country days is an exhibition of work which in part celebrates untamed patches of nature, however small they may be. In a world so thoroughly organised by man, I delight in those corners which have managed to escape our attentions.

“I can remember not so long ago reading a complaint in a newspaper which referred to “unruly saplings”; an amusing vision of small trees rioting sprang to mind.

“I often think that our wildlife might appreciate a few more neglected areas with plants, trees and bushes permitted to grow naturally.

“I live in a house adjacent to a wonderfully overgrown plot, and have been inspired by the variety of birds and butterflies inhabiting the area and I would imagine that there will be many less noticeable species secreted there.”

Carrie Taylor
St Just-in-Penwith, May 2008

Carrie Taylor studied at Harrogate College of Art and Bradford Art College and was also taught by Jean Georges Simon, a Hungarian artist who became a major influence on her work. Simon was a close friend of Bourdelle and Modigliani when he lived and worked in Paris.

It is an annual delight for us when St Just artist Carrie Taylor brings her latest collection of work for photography and exhibition. While never shy of painting the “big picture” and extolling the delights of the majestic landscape around us here in West Cornwall, Carrie more often than not looks to the hedgerows and patches of untended ground and to the shore for her hidden glories. Her focus on twigs and branches, grassy banks and strandlines and on the timid creatures of scrub and bush and shore, make her paintings a delight to behold. In the tradition of eighteenth century British naturalist Gilbert White, Carrie Taylor looks at natural habitats and shares her observations with us through her paintings.
