Catherine Harvey Jefferson is most at home on the cliffs and coastline of West Penwith. Living in Penzance, she is well placed to make a daily dash off to one or more of her many favourite locations. Sheltering from the worst of inclement weather, Catherine works swiftly and confidently in the open air, painting and sketching, preparing her work for finishing later in her studio.

Being a third generation painter from the Harvey family in Cornwall, Catherine carries on a long and distinguished tradition, having studied at Falmouth and Winchester Schools of Art. Although her roots lie in Cornwall, she worked in the Home Counties for many years and has only recently re-settled in the far south west.

She describes her latest collection of drawings and paintings as being about the places where the Atlantic Ocean, pushed by Westerly winds, meets the granite stronghold of the Land’s End peninsula. “I spend most of my time painting and drawing outside on the cliffs and have a strong sense of the enduring shape of the land”, she says. “The granite is the core rock, left behind as the softer rocks that once enveloped it, have been washed away and ground into sand. My work reflects the products of endless interaction between the weathering and erosive action the sea and the varying resistance of the land.”

Catherine Harvey Jefferson’s long awaited 2010 exhibition “Western Seaboard” opens at The Great Atlantic Bank Square Gallery, St Just-in-Penwith on May 1st and runs till May 26th
