Coast I walk the coast paths near my home nearly everyday, there is always something new to see, a new combination of light, form and colour. Ill find a sheltered spot and set to work trying to capture the vibrancy and heat of the day. My hand and eye are synchronised as I quickly weave ribbons of interlocking colour onto the pages of my sketchbook, the resulting work is raw and buzzes with energy. Returning to the calm of the studio I spend many hours engaged in a process of simplification, a honing down to the essential aspects of line and evocative colour, all the time trying to amplify the buzz and hum of the original sketch. Maggie Matthews, July 2006
Responding to our wonderful Cornish coastline, Maggie Matthews returns to her favourite subject matter. In this exhibition she mixes a unique sense of space, inspired by the dramatic expansive skies, with acutely observed natural forms found along our beaches and tidelines. Maggies latest collection of paintings brings together her bold use of colour and simple shape and form in what promises to be a dynamic new show. Coast opens at The Great Atlantic Falmouth Gallery on Saturday the 29th July and runs until Thursday 10th August 2006. Also at the Map Works Gallery in St Just from 13th - 24th August 2006.
