BIOGRAPHY by Michael Jay :

Born in London in 1957, Porl Thompson spent ten years as guitarist and songwriter with the British alternative rock band "The Cure". Porl had previously studied design, graphics and photography at West Sussex College and through his design company, "Parched Art", had produced most of The Cure's album covers.

Porl first exhibited at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery in 1998 and has returned in force to the art scene with a major web site showing his works at www.porl.co.uk. From this site, Porl's highly individual work is being seen and bought by people all over the world. Despite this global projection of his work, Porl is firmly rooted in the far south west of Britain. Indeed, his work reflects strongly his passion for the 'ancientness' of West Cornwall, the area where he settled with his family in 1992. This rugged and hauntingly beautiful area of Britain's Atlantic, Celtic fringe where he lives, fuels his love of dream states, subconscious thoughts and ethereal worlds. Porl works predominantly at night by candlelight or in complete darkness.

Though he apparently retired from the rigours of touring with The Cure ten years ago, Porl has never been far from the mainstream of the cultures that draw him most - art and making music. During the year 2000, Porl immersed himself in painting and in the construction of his www.porl.co.,uk web site. 2001 see's him heading off in other new directions. Has been working with Robert Plant (of Led Zeppelin fame) in a new band called "The Strange Sensation" and will be touring Europe and North America on several occasions during 2001. Porl is also working on a small book of images and words and looking ahead to an exhibition of paintings from the book. In September 2002, there will be an exhibition of his work at The Homer Watson Gallery in Kitchener, Ontario Canada.
