MICHAEL FINN, MAGGIE HENSHALL, ALASDAIR LINDSEY and PAUL MOUNT
new abstract work from some new faces and Cornwall's most respected abstract artists.

MICHAEL FINN grew up in Surrey and attended Kingston-upon-Thames School of Art. After war service as a pilot, he studied at the Royal College of Art, and then began a long and distinguished teaching career at the Somerset College of Art. In 1958 he became Principal of Falmouth School of Art. He was appointed Principal of the prestigious Bath Academy of Art in Corsham in 1972, where he remained until his retirement in the early 1980's.

Influenced by the abstract expressionist work of Mark Rothko and others, Finn’s post retirement work explores the relationship between colour and space creating perfectly balanced and harmonious compositions that are "areas of colour in which to rest and enjoy the quiet".

Michael still exhibits widely and among other venues, has a major show planned for the Newlyn Gallery in February 2001.

Michael Finn lives on the outskirts of St Just with his wife Celia.

ALASDAIR LINDSAY was born in Cheshire in 1975 and attended West Cheshire College, Reading University and Falmouth College of Arts where he recently graduated in Fine Art.

His paintings are produced using stored memories, ideas and moods which relate to the experience of his surrounding environment. They involve comparisons between the ‘natural’ and the ‘man-made’ elements in the landscape and the mood is dictated by the relationship of colour and mark.

In a short career to date, Alasdair Lindsay has made a great impression on those who have seen his work. It is not often that an artist can enjoy highly successful solo and mixed shows within a year of graduating. Alasdair has shown at the Brian Sinfield Gallery in Oxfordshire and The Great Atlantic Map Works.

PAUL MOUNT was born in Devon and attended Paignton School of Art and the Royal College of Art. His studies were interrupted by war service, after which he concluded his studies and then taught at Winchester School of Art and later directed an art department in Nigeria.

Whilst in Nigeria, he began experimenting in three dimensional work - carving and casting of concrete, welding steel and fabricating in glass-reinforced plastic. Afterwards, as a design consultant with a group of architects in West Africa, he was involved in a wide variety of projects.

He returned to England in 1962 and established himself as a sculptor and painter, living in St.Just with his wife, the artist June Miles, where they run their ‘Nancherrow Studio’.

Paul Mount has exhibited throughout the UK, Europe, Africa and America.
