Book launch and exhibition of paintings by Gill Watkiss

Out for the day, Plain an Gwarry, St Just
2001 oil on board 21 x 23”

GILL WATKISS studied at the South West Essex School of Art before coming to live in Newlyn, Cornwall in 1959. She subsequently moved to a house at Cape Cornwall, St. Just-in-Penwith but now lives in Penzance. Her paintings feature ordinary people in their natural surroundings - in towns, out in the country, on the coast, in parks. To the many people who admire her work, Gill Watkiss’ paintings capture the essence of everyday life.

Gill’s work received early recognition when she won the national competition “The Small Picture Lives Again” in 1972 and has since exhibited widely up and down the country in solo and shared shows. She has had solo shows at Birmingham and Exeter Universities, the Wills Lane Gallery in St. Ives, Bodmin Fine Art, Renaissance Gallery in Teignmouth, the Coach House Gallery in Guernsey and most notably at the Newlyn Gallery in 1979 and again in 1991. This latter show - an early Retrospective - went on to tour the country visiting Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and The Tabernacle Centre in Machynlleth, Wales. In recent years she has enjoyed several successful solo shows at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery, St. Just-in-Penwith. Gill's work can be found in many quality galleries in Cornwall and elsewhere.

Her paintings feature in private and public collections throughout Britain and a number of overseas countries. The works on show in this Retrospective cover the period from 1974 to 2002 and include a number of paintings from her private collection.
