Michael Upton was born in Birmingham in 1938. He attended Birmingham College of Art (1954-1958) and the Royal Academy Schools in London (1958-62) where he was a Senior Lecturer in Painting.
He has received numerous awards including a Leverhulme Scholarship
(Royal Academy Schools) in 1960; Abbey Scholarship (Rome Scholarship
to Italy) in 1962; Cassandra Foundation New York, 1971; South
West Arts Major Award, 1981 and the Singer and Freidlander Prize
(Sunday Times) in 1993.
His works can be found in Public and Private collections throughout
Britain and abroad and in the collections of the Arts Council
of Great Britain, the British Council and the Government Art Collection.
Since 1980, In addition to innumerable mixed shows, Michael's
solo shows have included the Yale Centre for British Art, Conneticut
(1987) and the Anthony Ralph Gallery, New York (1987) in the USA;
the Anne Berthoud Gallery and Cassian de Vere Cole Fine Art in
London (several occasions); the Richard DeMarco Gallery, Edinburgh;
the Book Gallery, St Ives; and David Hibberd Gallery, Dorset (with
Peter Lloyd Jones).
During 1998 Michael 's work was shown at the Royal Academy Summer
Show, the Newlyn Society Show, the Royal West of England Academy,
Bristol and he was an invited artist at the Redfern Gallery, London.
So far in 1999, he has exhibited at the Beatrice Royal Gallery
in Eastleigh, Hants ("Cornish Art") and at The Great Atlantic
Map Works Gallery in St Just-in-Penwith, Cornwall.
Michael Upton lived in Mousehole until his untimely death in 2002.
