the Isles of Scilly, where she now resides. The high ground of West Penwith Leaving St Ives - looking back ..and forward "..with the sea on the right .." Originally, she trained at Harrow School of Art in the mid-sixties
and worked in London as a freelance
illustrator until moving to Cornwall in 1975.
After a short time out to have two daughters and run a smallholding
at Pendeen near Penzance, she began to sell etchings through a
London agent. In the early 80's she started working for the Adult
Education Service teaching Printmaking and Drawing, and working
in local schools under the South West Arts "Artists in Schools"
scheme.
Moving to St. Martins, an "off-island" in the Isles of Scilly,
in 1989 came as a complete change of direction and there, she
opened North Farm Gallery and has painted full time ever since.
Since the mid 90's Sue has worked on a series of books. Her first,
"Sketches of Scilly" was published in 1997. Since then there have been two more "Scillies" books, one each on St Ives, The Fal, Fowey and Salcombe and two
on "The Eden Project". Her latest publication, "Looking Westward from St Ives to Land's End" has seen her re-visit her favourite localities on the fabled
road between St Ives and Land's End. This book "is for me" she says!
Sue exhibits her paintings in Galleries all over the South West,
especially in Cornwall, at Trelissick and Lanhydrock National
Trust Galleries and at the Great Atlantic Galleries in St. Just.
Her books are available in most good book shops.
Sue recently said, "though I spend a growing amount of time working on the mainland,
recording the changing weather and landscape of St. Martins remains
my greatest pleasure . . . and challenge." Small wonder then, that on her painting of Land's End, the final
one in the current series, she has written "Land's End....and the little smudge in the distance....which
is home"!
All of the paintings in this brochure are featured in Sue's book "Looking Westward from St Ives to Land's End". They have been quite literally cut from her sketchbook, photographed
and reproduced in the 48-page book (details below). Her original
paintings have been carefully mounted, framed and glazed are now
being offered for sale through this brochure and at The Great
Atlantic Map Works Gallery in St Just - which lies just yards
from the St Ives - Land's End road.
