Evening into Night

"For some time now I have been interested in the minimal qualities of the sea and the sky, using the horizon as a focal point of the picture. These paintings take as their subject the specific time or moment of twilight.

"At the end of day there is a progression of moments where light/colour is compressed above the horizon as it moves towards night. This resonant, sometimes sublime time, marks a poignant moment of the day.

"A brief glimpse into stillness, a sense of the past and present fluxed into one moment. A last glance at the day's light before the surfaces around you sink into inky blackness."

Tom Rickman June 2001

TOM RICKMAN

Tom was born in the City of London in 1960. He studied Fine Art at Epson College of Art & Design from 1979-82. He lived and worked in West Dorset from 1983 to 1992. During this time he used a beach hut as a studio for three years, painting the light and changing atmosphere of Lyme Bay.

Then, as now, he has always been interested in the horizon as the focal point, a division of two elements. A horizontal edge; the ending of the land.

Moving to West Cornwall in 1992 seemed a logical progression for him, living close to the rugged romantic coastline of West Penwith, facing out to the Atlantic.

Tom has exhibited throughout the West Country, London, Hong Kong, Buenos Aries, New Jersey and Amsterdam. He has had work published by Collins and is a Member of the Society of Landscape Painters. His paintings are exhibited widely and he has had several solo shows at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery in St Just.

Tom Rickman lives with his partner and their two young children in Mousehole, West Cornwall.
