Tom Rickman was born in the City of London in 1960. He studied Fine Art at Epson College of Art & Design from 1979 to 82. He lived and worked in West Dorset from 1983 to 1992. During this time he used a beach hut as a studio, painting the light and changing atmosphere of Lyme Bay.

Then, as now, he has always been interested in the horizon as the focal point, a division of two elements. A horizontal edge.

Moving to West Cornwall in 1992 seemed a logical progression for him. The rugged romantic coastline of West Penwith facing out to the Atlantic. The ending of the land.

"With a sense of awe and yearning I go to the edge of this ocean; with the idea of the Western Approaches as a specific place, vast, filled with light and weather; with the want to explore something that is intangible and insoluble from the brink of the physical land."

Tom has exhibited throughout the West Country, London, Hong Kong, Buenos Aries, New Jersey and Amsterdam. He has had work published by Collins and is a Member of the Society of Landscape Painters.

He lives with his partner and their two young children in Mousehole, West Cornwall.

“After going away,
I always return to the sun
in winter
in summer

like breath
like air

Fragrant
failing,
brilliant light”

Porl Thompson was born in London in 1957. He studied at West Sussex College of Design, concentrating on graphics, illustration and photography. On leaving college he formed a design company 'Parched Art' who were responsible for the majority of album covers for 'The Cure'. He spent 10 years touring and recording with the band as guitarist and songwriter.

Porl seized the opportunity to move permanently to West Cornwall in 1992, where he now lives with his wife and three children.

His work reflects strongly his passion for the 'ancientness' of West Penwith and his love of dream states, subconscious thoughts and ethereal worlds. Porl works predominantly at night by candlelight or in complete darkness.

A member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, Porl has had mixed exhibitions at the Rainyday Gallery, Penzance and has exhibited work at the Penwith and Salthouse Galleries, St Ives; Newlyn Orion Gallery, Tate Gallery Restaurant, St Ives and The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery, St Just.

At present Porl is working on a series of paintings that have a 'main' image. Peripheral canvases highlight aura colours and extensions from the dominant theme.
