The Great Atlantic Galleries are pleased to be showing a striking collection of printed works by the celebrated artist, engraver, typographer, sculptor and writer, Eric Gill (1882 - 1940).

Gill, despite his colourful and controversial lifestyle, was a highly influential figure working from significantly from religious-artistic communes that he set up in Sussex, the Welsh Borders and latterly in Buckinghamshire.

In 1932 Gill produced a group of sculptures, Prospero and Ariel, and others for the BBC's Broadcasting House in London. In 1937, he designed the background of the first George VI definitive stamp series for the Post Office, and in 1938 produced The Creation of Adam, three bas-reliefs in stone for the Palace of Nations, the League of Nations building in Geneva, Switzerland. During this period he was made a Royal Designer for Industry, the highest British award for designers, by the Royal Society of Arts and became a founder-member of the newly established Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry.

Eric Gill was also well known for his typefaces, especially Gill Sans, which are still in use today, and of course, we are fortunate to be able to see and buy his exquisite, original prints from engravings.

Gill’s prints first appeared invariably in tiny editions or as illustrations in limited edition books, such as those he illustrated for the Golden Cockerel Press. Most fortunately in 1929, his friend and publisher, Douglas Cleverdon, produced a book of his prints, all made from the original blocks. This was followed 5 years later by a second similar book published by Faber.

A collection of almost 100 Eric Gill original prints from wood and copper engravings may be seen and purchased at the Cape Cornwall Golf and Leisure Resort, Cape Cornwall, St Just-in-Penwith from 2.00pm – 5.00pm on Sunday afternoon and from 11.00am – 5.00pm Monday – Wednesday (24 – 27 October). On October 28, the collection will move to The Great Atlantic’s Bank Square Gallery in St Just and in mid November to their Arwenack Street Gallery in Falmouth.

The Great Atlantic Galleries are located in the centre of St Just-in-Penwith at 5 Bank Square, and at 48 Arwenack Street, Falmouth, near the National Maritime Museum.
