NEIL DAVIES

After spending his early childhood in a small fishing village in Scotland, Neil Davies moved south, and became a student at Farnham School of Art. After graduation, there followed a lengthy stay in Florence before lecturing at Guildford School of Art and West Surrey College of Art. Whilst teaching, Neil became fascinated with the nature of the Penwith landscape and he now paints full time, working from his studio on the north coast at Hellesveor.

“My paintings are evolved from an instinctive response to the diversity of the environment, centring around the elements of weather, land, light and sea. The ancient landscape becomes a place of encounter where a shift in atmosphere or light triggers a corresponding emotion. My approach is forceful and energetic - building up layers, often scraping back and re-working, resulting in an impasto, scumbled surface. The vigorous working process reflects the physical nature of the landscape itself.”

ALASDAIR LINDSAY

Cheshire born Alasdair Lindsay studied at West Cheshire College, Reading University and Falmouth College of Art. After graduating from the latter, he chose to remain in Falmouth where the boats, docks and shipyards and the neighbouring coastline of West Cornwall are obvious influences on his work.

Working in acrylic on canvas and on board (and occasionally in collage) in a bold, graphic and yet subtle style, Alasdair has quickly made an impression on the art scene in Cornwall with mixed exhibitions around the country and solo exhibitions in the Cotswolds and of course, at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery in St. Just. Alasdair has recently been awarded Second Prize in the prestigious Hunting Art Prize at the Royal College of Art, London. His work was in a short list of 6 paintings selected from over 1800 entries. This £4000 prize and his recently completed commission for 12 paintings for Cunard’s flagship cruise liner, Queen Mary II puts Al Lindsay on course for a highly successful career.

“My painting is based on what I see everyday in an around Falmouth harbour and when I go further a field, to the superb surfing beaches around the coast of Cornwall.

“I study these places regularly and sometimes sketch on site, although I usually paint from memory and through experimentation.

“My studio work is based on decisions through instinct rather than theory. Often the subject of my painting becomes secondary to the emerging pattern of abstract areas, which must be evaluated and perhaps edited for the sake of the overall composition”

DYLAN LLOYD

Kent born artist Dylan Lloyd trained at Maidstone College of Art before completing a degree in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and post-graduate studies at the University of Wales. He began a teaching career at Monmouth School in 1995. Since 2000 he has been Director of Art at Canford School in Dorset and balances life as a teacher and painter.

"The process of creating a painting particularly interests me,” says Dylan. “My work combines the decisions that are made about colour, how it should be applied and what paint to use. There are common motifs that link the paintings which have been developed over the last ten years. In this current series I have been developing speeds of application and the use of matt and gloss paints to change the balance in the paintings."

Dylan’s studio, set in 350 acres of parkland, has encouraged him to move in and out of abstraction. Recent figurative projects based on trees within the park’s arboretum have influenced his return to abstraction. Drawing plays an important role in his practice whether dealing directly from external subject matter or studies in the studio for abstract compositions.

Recent exhibitions include:

2004 NEAC drawings, Cedar House Gallery, Ripley
2004 Best of the West, The Great Atlantic Church Street Gallery, Monmouth
2003 A Year in Canford Arboretum, Pavilion Gallery, Canford Magna
2001 Paint, Glass, Print. Canford School, Wimborne

MYLES OXENFORD

Myles Oxenford was born in Plymouth and paints full time from a studio in Falmouth, where he has remained since graduating from Falmouth College of Art in 2000. His work has been exhibited widely throughout Cornwall and also in London at The Unicorn Gallery and The Affordable Art Fair, Battersea. In the past year his work has been selected for exhibition in the Discerning Eye competition at the Mall Gallery, London and also with Thompsons Gallery, London. Myles has been exhibiting at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery since 2001 and we were delighted to be able to stage the first major solo collection of work by this exciting young landscape painter in 2004. We have confidence that Myles Oxenford will undoubtedly go on to become a major name in landscape painting in Britain.

”In my paintings I want to convey the feeling of sitting in and becoming part of the landscape. I primarily paint outside to capture the light and movement that make the landscape alive to me. By exploring colour and brush marks I am constantly experimenting with different ways of balancing a desire to represent and abstract the Cornish landscape”

NEIL PINKETT

NEIL PINKETT was born in 1958 in Britain’s most westerly town, St Just-in-Penwith, near Land’s End, Cornwall. He trained in graphic design and worked for several years as a freelance illustrator before taking the path that has established him as a leading British landscape oil painter. He lives in the ancient Cornish town of Penzance and works from his studio in the nearby fishing port of Newlyn.

SIMON STOOKS

Dorset born Simon Stooks trained at Shelley Park School of Art in Bournemouth and graduated from Falmouth School of Art. His current work features evocative, semi-abstract landscapes and seascapes that are built around a subtle and sensitive use of colour.

Simon’s work has been exhibited widely, especially at the Mall Gallery and in Chancery Lane, London, Mayfield Gallery, Bournemouth and other galleries throughout the country including leading Falmouth gallery, “Beside the Wave”. His work has also been shown in New England.

“There is a balance, I hope, in all my work. A balance between creating work to please me and yet to remain accessible to the viewer; a balance between what I am painting and the aesthetics of the painterly effect, the actual surface quality of the paint.

“I enjoy the struggle that takes place against the unknown as intuition takes over when painting outside, as well as the known reflective calm of the studio.”
