martin collins
paintings of the islands

From Burnt Hll, St Martin’s
14 x 18” 35 x 45cm mixed media

Martin Collins grew up in the West Country and remembers being drawn to the coastline and the ocean from an early age. After gaining a degree in Fine Art, he taught for a number of years in the Midlands where his paintings of urban facades were exhibited widely and can be found in many private collections.

As a keen lifelong walker, Martin left teaching to become a freelance author of guidebooks, work which inevitably involved much tramping around the coasts and hills of both the UK and mainland Europe. It was during this period that he rediscovered his artistic roots, returning again and again to the South West to paint. Annual visits to the Isles of Scilly became almost a family institution.

Martin now paints full time from his studio on the edge of Snowdonia. He continues to explore his passion for the Atlantic coast, embracing the fringes of Wales, Cornwall, Scilly, south-west Ireland and Brittany; he also paints the hills and mountains of Wales which hold a parallel fascination.

The Isles of Scilly still occupy a special place in Martin’s affections and he regularly dedicates a body of work to these beautiful islands which he knows so well.

Martin Collins will present a major exhibition of work from Europe’s ‘Celtic Fringe’ in the spring at The Great Atlantic Falmouth Gallery.
