After spending his early childhood in a small fishing village in Scotland, Neil Davies moved south, and became a student at Farnham School of Art. After graduation, there followed a lengthy stay in Florence before lecturing at Guildford School of Art and West Surrey College of Art. Whilst teaching, Neil became fascinated with the nature of the Penwith landscape and he now paints full time, working from his studio on the north coast at Hellesveor. “My paintings are evolved from an instinctive response to the diversity of the environment, centring around the elements of weather, land, light and sea. The ancient landscape becomes a place of encounter where a shift in atmosphere or light triggers a corresponding emotion. My approach is forceful and energetic - building up layers, often scraping back and re-working, resulting in an impasto, scumbled surface.
