“Cassiterite: heavy, brown-to-black mineral, tin oxide, SnO2 . It is found as short prismatic crystals and as irregular masses, usually in veins and replacement deposits associated with granites. Since it is hard, heavy, and resistant to weathering, it often concentrates in alluvial deposits derived from cassiterite-bearing rocks. It is the principal ore of tin” (1)

Cassiterite is the ore of tin that, together with ores of copper, have until very recently under-pinned the economy of Cornwall since before the birth of Christ. The best specimens of cassiterite show a brilliant sparkling luster, which is one of the reasons why Richard Pearce wanted to call this collection of paintings “Cassiterites”. The other reason is rather more intriguing.

Throughout history there have been tantalizing references to the Isles of Scilly, where Richard Pearce was born, lives and works, as the “Cassiterites” or “Tin Islands” (although, paradoixically, there are no records of actual tin mining on the islands).

“The islands that the Greeks call Cassiterites, in consequence of their abundance of tin, are out in the Atlantic facing the cape called The End of Earth; they are the six Islands of the Gods, which some people have designated as the Isles of Bliss.” (2)

“The seafarers referred to as Phoenician strategically guarded the route to the Cassiterites, or tin islands, Cornwall in Britain and some of the Channel Islands that made them so wealthy.” (3)

This latest collection of recent work by Richard Pearce is called “Cassiterites” in recognition of the importance of tin in the myths and legends that swirl around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and the special, sparkling properties of the principal ore of tin.

Richard Pearce.
For a man who works in a shed on a small island off the coast of Cornwall, Richard Pearce has a remarkably high profile. His work is widely available as prints and cards and his original paintings are being avidly collected. Richard’s mainland exhibitions invariably sell-out and he is barely able to keep up with demand from visitors to his studio during the summer months.

He was born, raised and educated on the Isles of Scilly. He began painting in the early 90’s and now has a terrific following on the Islands, on the mainland and overseas, particularly in Australia, where he spends the winter months. This, his third exhibition at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery, is the mark of an artist who is clearly going from strength to strength.
