Moorland, Chun Downs II Mark Spray was born in Derbyshire and moved to West Cornwall in 2000. He was a student at Manchester Metropolitan University (1992-95) and Goldsmiths College, London (1998-99). He is now a dedicated artist living and working in the St. Just area.
Artists Statement: Currently my work has developed into two separate but interwoven elements, which I have called Strata and Moorland. The series compliment each other and encompass the extremes of environment found here in Penwith. The Strata series; closed and sheltered, the Moorland paintings; expansive, exposed. Strata inspired by my interest in geology, the layers of the earths crust descending unremittingly seaward, the coastline in cross-section with its strata layers of rock and soil, a rich tapestry of texture and colour, hopeful and yet a darker sense of erosion, foreboding and inevitability pervades. Moorland; the moors have perhaps been most eloquently described as: a stage for the performance of heaven where any audience is incidental (Ted Hughes) Painting for me is the calm in the eye of a storm. Centered and grounded. The work has enabled me to develop a fuller understanding of my relationship with nature and of my own creative process, furthering my understanding of self. To find only absence in presence, me without myself. (Mallarme) Please call 01736 788911 or e-mail: gallery@greatatlantic.co.uk to reserve the painting of your choice.
