Moorland, Chun Downs II
70 x 70cm 27.5 x 27.5” oil and mixed media on canvas

Mark Spray was born in Derbyshire and moved to West Cornwall in 2000. He was a student at Manchester Metropolitan University (1992-95) and Goldsmiths College, London (1998-99). He is now a dedicated artist living and working in the St. Just area.

Artist’s Statement:

“Currently my work has developed into two separate but interwoven elements, which I have called “Strata” and “Moorland”. The series compliment each other and encompass the extremes of environment found here in Penwith. The “Strata” series; closed and sheltered, the “Moorland” paintings; expansive, exposed. “Strata” inspired by my interest in geology, the layers of the earth’s crust descending unremittingly seaward, the coastline in cross-section with its strata layers of rock and soil, a rich tapestry of texture and colour, hopeful and yet a darker sense of erosion, foreboding and inevitability pervades.

“Moorland”; the moors have perhaps been most eloquently described as:

“a stage for the performance of heaven” where “any audience is incidental” (Ted Hughes)

“Painting for me is the calm in the eye of a storm. Centered and grounded. The work has enabled me to develop a fuller understanding of my relationship with nature and of my own creative process, furthering my understanding of self.”

“To find only absence in presence, me without myself.” (Mallarme)
