Cornish wall and sun bathed fields

Richard Stanley was born in Nottingham in 1983, though from the age of seven he grew up in a remote part of North Devon, where he spent much of his time drawing and painting his surroundings.

After obtaining distinctions in Art and Design from the North Devon College, Richard continued his education in the arts, achieving a first class honours degree in Illustration from Falmouth College of Arts. Apart from his personal painting, he works as a successful Devon-based illustrator, represented by agents in London and New York, who provide him with commissions from both national and international clients. “Training as an illustrator has provided me with the draftsmanship skills that are a key foundation in all my work”, he says.

This collection, painted in the early months of 2007, features the land along the B3306 road between St Just and St Ives, which best shows the rugged beauty of West Penwith with crumbling mines, granite walls, windswept landscape, cottages sheltering from the elements and much more.

“Many artworks from the collection are produced using an oil on paper technique”, says Richard. “I enjoy the immediacy of working in this manner and it allows me to produce spontaneous dynamic artworks on location.

“The time I spent living in Constantine, whilst at Falmouth College, encouraged me to spend increasing amounts of time painting in the open air, capturing elements of light and earth in pure impressionistic form. Developing mark making, surface textures and a fauvist sense of colour, each place I paint has an ambience, a feeling that is all around in the air, I feel it is my job is to translate this atmosphere into each brush mark I make and each colour I mix”.
