Geevor Cliffs The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery is pleased to present a new
collection of paintings by Paul Lewin entitled Touchstones. The coastal and moorland areas of North Devon and Cornwall are
a constant source of inspiration to him, and he can often be found
out painting in all weathers. Of his working method the poet Christine
Evans has written His relationship with landscape is intense; he seems absorbed,
almost subsumed into it, driven by a restless energy that is characteristic
of the sort of places he is drawn to - the extreme edges of the
land, jutting promontories and tidal shores where the frontiers
between land and sea are blurred and perspectives ever changing
as the sky. His practice is to complete a painting at a single
sitting if possible. Sometimes a piece will resolve itself quickly,
in a couple of hours or so; more often, he will be working out
in the open for five or six hours or until the light goes. Lewin has had work published in Dorling and Kindersleys Art School series. He was involved in setting up an artists co-operative
gallery in Penzance and was the Art Director at The Great Atlantic
Map Works Gallery in its first year, where his meticulous standards
and intuitive artistic judgements formed the foundation for future
developments at the gallery. Indeed he was one of a small number
of influential and talented artists who, through The Great Atlantic
stimulated a growing reputation for high quality art in St Just-in-Penwith,
Britains most westerly town. Lewin has achieved considerable success relatively early in his
painting career and his works have been purchased for collections
in the UK, USA, Germany, Mexico, The Far East and Australia. He
has had almost 30 solo exhibitions over the past 15 years and
with each exhibition, his work continues to mature. Recently Lewin has spent time painting in Australia and on the
North Yorkshire Moors. Over the past few years he has also benefited
from periods of residency on Nantucket Island off the eastern
seaboard of the USA and much more remote islands off the British
Coast - Bardsey Island off North Wales, Orkney Islands off Northern
Scotland, Isles of Scilly off Cornwall and Lundy Island off the
Devon Coast. These particular influences on his work are very
much in evidence.
