Patrick Heron (1920-1999)
Patrick Heron was a British painter, designer, and writer who was initially influenced by the work of Henri Matisse and Georges Braque and who himself went on to influence a generation of artists. Born in Leeds in 1920, Heron moved to Cornwall in 1956, took up abstraction and became a member of the St. Ives School. His paintings were a combination of stripe compositions and more organic shapes, all done in vibrant colours. Heron’s books included The Changing Forms of Art in 1955 and The Shape of Colour in 1973. He played a leading role in the establishment of Tate St Ives, where some of his work is on permanent display.
