The twentieth century saw the truly exceptional development of a culture of art and a community of artists in West Cornwall. This development has been well chronicled by, among others, Tom Cross in his three books - “The Shining Sands” (1880-1930), “Painting the Warmth of the Sun: St Ives Artists” (1939-1975) and “Catching the Wave” (1975 onwards)*. Though St Ives and Newlyn may have been the focus of early developments, the historic port of Falmouth has become the centre of art education in the region and so, The Great Atlantic Arwenack Street Gallery in Falmouth is uniquely fortunate to be able to present a range of work that encompasses many of the key artists involved in this great cultural development.

Over 120 paintings, from 22 artists - many no longer with us, make up this definitive collection that we have called The Golden Age of Cornish Art. The work all comes from one of the largest private collections ever to be presented in a single exhibition in a commercial gallery - and every piece is for sale. Though the core of the collection represents the post war St Ives School, we have a representative of the early years at St Ives in Alfred Wallis; of a pioneer member the Newlyn School in Walter Langley; and of the “alive and kicking” school in no less a person than Fred Yates!

This exhibition is presented in association with Clark Art Ltd and is sponsored by Coode’s Solicitors and the involvement of both firms is gratefully acknowledged.
