David Hockney (1937 - )

A major touring exhibition of almost 40 David Hockney original etchings and other prints will visit the Cornish port and art University town of Falmouth.

David Hockney was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1937. A brilliant draughtsman, he attended Bradford School of Art (1953-7) and Royal College of Art (1959-62), where he was awarded a Gold Medal and the Guinness Award for Etching. He subsequently won innumerable prizes for his painting, graphics and photography and was elected RA in 1991 and was made Companion of Honour in 1997. Hockney moved in Los Angeles from 1977, where the Pacific Ocean light and the liberal social attitudes had a marked influence.

Having gained international success from his mid-twenties, David Hockney is arguably the best known painter of his generation. Fortunately for us he has enjoyed printmaking throughout his distinguished career and we are delighted to be able to offer for sale many examples of his outstanding etchings, particularly from the now sought after early years.

The works on exhibition at The Great Atlantic Falmouth Gallery have been drawn from three particular sources of notable works for the printed page: his etched illustrations for Greek poet “C.P. Cavafy’s Poems”, 1967, “Six Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm”, 1969 and “The Blue Guitar, etchings by David Hockney who was inspired by Wallace Stevens who was inspired by Pablo Picasso”, 1977.
