special collection

The internationally acclaimed artist David Hockney was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1937. A brilliant draughtsman, he attended Bradford School of Art (1953-7) and Royal College of Art (1959-62), where he was awarded a Gold Medal and the Guinness Award for Etching. He subsequently won innumerable prizes for his painting, graphics and photography and was elected RA in 1991 and was made Companion of Honour in 1997. Hockney moved in Los Angeles from 1977, where the Pacific Ocean light and the liberal social attitudes had a marked influence. He has now returned to live in his native Yorkshire and has recently made large scale paintings and photographs.

Having gained international success from his mid-twenties, David Hockney is arguably the best known painter of his generation. Fortunately for us he has been an outstanding printmaker throughout his distinguished career and while his original paintings may be beyond the grasp of all but the wealthiest, his etchings are eminently affordable with prices ranging from just under £400 to just over £3000.

The Great Atlantic Arwenack Street Gallery in Falmouth is offering for sale a dozen or so original Hockney etchings from his 1969 series from “Six Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm”. There were precisely 530 impression of each etching. The first 30 were Artist’s Proof’s, signed and numbered. The next 100 were signed and numbered and the remaining 400 unsigned and unnumbered.

Hockney’s etchings may be seen at The Great Atlantic Arwenack Street Gallery until July 10th 2010.
