IDENTITY - an exceptional exhibition showcasing some of the finest talents in contemporary painting, printmaking and sculpture.

The selected artists range from the internationally acclaimed and established styles of Mary Stork and June Miles through to the beautiful and delicate printmaking from recent Falmouth College of Art graduate Anja Percival and current Falmouth printmaking student Anne Karhu.

We are particularly delighted to welcome Nicola Bealing, an artist whose previous exhibitions elsewhere have generated much acclaim and subsequently sold out. We have admired her work for some years and hope her outstanding paintings will become a regular feature at The Great Atlantic Galleries.

Cardiff based artist Sue Hunt produces vibrant still-life paintings that are highly collectable and the technically brilliant printmaking and emotive painting of Bren Unwin has been of interest to Great Atlantic visitors for some years.

Krista Taylor and Shirley Foote are newcomers to our gallery and bring with them their own individual and fresh abstract ways of working.

All of these exhibitors have been chosen for their distinctive styles, commitment and passion for their chosen fields of artistic pursuit. Each possess a unique and individual identity, creating work that is instantly recognisable as their own.

Nicola Bealing was born in 1963 and spent a large part of her childhood living in Malaysia and travelling in the Far East. She studied art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. In 1988 Nicola came to Cornwall to rent a studio for 2 months, but 16 years (and several studios) later she is still here, living near Helston with her partner, the painter Anthony Bryant and their 2 young sons.

Nicola’s paintings have always been narrative and their imagery is based on a wide variety of sources: “pure imagination, daydreaming, eaves-dropping, travelling and observing fleeting incidents”. She enjoys the physical nature of paint - pushing and pulling colour into shape, scratching into it and wiping it out, thus keeping the surface of a painting alive and lively.

Nicola Bealing’s c.v. is studded with prizes, awards, prestigious exhibitions, and
commendations in a career that goes back to the late 1980’s.

Shirley Foote studied at the West of England College of Art. She set up a ceramics workshop in the early 70’s and worked professionally at this until the mid-90’s when she began painting full-time. Her ceramics have been shown nationwide and, since 1998 she has shown her paintings at more than a dozen venues.

This is how Shirley Foote describes her work process: “For my work, my sketch book drawings have been a vital part of my work process in the past, though I find I am relying on them less and less nowadays as starting points for my paintings. I work with images; memories stored subliminally. I try to dig beneath the surface, to go behind and beyond what is there. It is only when I start to push paint around the canvas that the journey begins….”.

June Miles was born in London in 1924 and spent the first six years of her life on an island near Hong Kong. She studied at The Slade and during the war, drew maps in an Admiralty drawing office. She lives in St. Just with her husband - the painter and sculptor Paul Mount. The serene still lives and landscapes of June Miles are effused with a gentle stillness and beautiful balance of colour which have proved most sought after over the years.

Mary Stork’s work is in demand from top selling galleries in London and elsewhere in the UK and features in private homes, colleges, and corporate buildings around the world. She studied at the West of England College of Art from 1955, where, in her own words, she received “a thorough classical training in drawing, colour and sculpture, which remains apparent in my current work”. She then studied at the Slade, benefiting from the tuition of the many artists of international repute on the staff. From London, Mary moved to West Penwith in Cornwall, living and working amongst the thriving colony of established artists. Mary has had an interest in sculpture for many years and her work has always had a sculptural feel to it, therefore, it is unsurprising that she has recently begun to work in three dimensions, producing striking sculptures in fabricated stainless steel limited editions.

Krista Taylor Painting mainly in oils, Krista Taylor’s work is at once bold and personal, abstract and figurative. Her inspiration rises from personal observations of and reflections on, the natural world, current affairs and the subtle rhythms and structures of life and relationships. Krista’s interests vary: there is a combination of figurative, landscape and abstract pieces, where the focus shifts from the narrative in the figurative work, through observations of her inspiring natural surroundings in Cornwall, to an exploration of form, texture and colour in the abstract. She is a member of the Chartered Society of Designers and has recently downsized her long-standing design business to pursue her passion for painting and commit to the growing demand for her work. She is predominantly self-taught and has lived in Cornwall since 1984 when she moved from Lancashire to complete her foundation studies at Falmouth College of Arts.
