Catherine Harvey Jefferson

Catherine is a third generation painter from the Harvey family in Cornwall. She studied at Falmouth and Winchester Schools of Art.

Catherine is a regular exhibitor at The Great Atlantic Galleries and an enthusiastic participant in the Galleries’ travelling road-show programme. She often undertakes workshop sessions with students at host road-show venues, where her flair and energy inspires young artists.

Inshore waters

“I don’t listen to the shipping forecast as regularly as I used to but it was a part of my daily life for a long time and the names are etched in my memory and echo when I look out to sea. The story of the coastal weather helps me find a place to paint.

“I work in the landscape for the most part and watching the sea change and the wind rise with the pull of the ocean is all part of the energy expressed in my work - the landscape being a vehicle to hold my idea of colour.

“The inshore landscape of West Cornwall forms the basis for this body of work. The paintings tell tales of my year from Choughs fledging at Botallack - watching the tall ships leave Falmouth in September through to the changing colour of Newlyn harbour as the trawlers are fitted for the Spring.

“This exhibition is dedicated to Christine Harvey who is a fighter and a great and talented woman who happens to be my Mum.”
