Robert Jones was born in Cornwall and has spent most of his life working here. He needs little in the way of introduction. An artist and author of art historical books, he has been exhibiting his striking oil paintings in galleries across the nation as well as in Cornwall for many years and at The Great Atlantic since 1999.
This particular exhibition came about in a less than usual way. Early in 2005, Michael and Hayley Jay, Directors of The Great Atlantic Art Business Ltd, were quietly preparing to open a new flagship gallery in Falmouth in time for Easter. For reasons of commercial confidentiality, no one else knew about the new venture. Artists who could provide a significant body of work for exhibition and sale from stock at relatively short notice, were quietly being sought. Meanwhile, Robert Jones had been enjoying a major retrospective show called From Dark to Light to much acclaim at the public gallery in the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. While the Jays were seeking that significant body of work, Robert was looking for a wider platform to show some of his paintings particularly the larger ones, from the retrospective. Hence this show!
The Great Atlantic Falmouth Gallery provides an excellent setting for Roberts paintings; especially his very large seascapes on the main, high walls and with his smaller works in the many alcoves and on the pillars. Since many of his paintings feature the Atlantic Ocean, it is appropriate that they will be seen in a building that has had a long connection with shipping, including being used as a Lloyds Shipping Agency for much of the 20th century and which overlooks Falmouths historic Custom House Quay.
