39 x 47” 100 x 120cm acrylic on canvas

Alasdair Lindsay studied at West Cheshire College, Reading University and Falmouth College of Art. After graduation, he chose to remain in Falmouth where the boats, docks and shipyards and the neighbouring coastline of West Cornwall are obvious influences on his work. Working in acrylic on canvas and on board (and occasionally in collage) in a bold, graphic and yet subtle style, Alasdair has quickly made an impression on the art scene in Cornwall with mixed exhibitions around the country and solo exhibitions in the Cotswolds, in London and of course, at The Great Atlantic Galleries in Cornwall. In 2004 Alasdair was awarded Second Prize in the prestigious Hunting Art Prize at the Royal College of Art, London. His work was in a short list of 6 paintings selected from over 1800 entries. This £4000 prize and an influential commission for 12 paintings for Cunard’s flagship cruise liner, Queen Mary II were significant progression steps in Alasdair Lindsay’s increasingly successful career.

“As an artist I am most interested in compositions where land meets the sea. There’s a wealth of subject matter in Cornwall in small hamlets in the sheltered coves to the busy dockyards and moorings of Falmouth. Each composition presents different aspects of my painting process but all the paintings are unmistakably linked by the sea and its importance to the community around coastal Cornwall. Whether the sea is rough and unwelcoming in winter, or a summer playground, the colours around the harbour are always changing. Buildings and boats fight a constant battle against the elements and become shaped and worn. My paintings are concerned with the relationship of the natural and man made elements which make up Cornwall’s coastline.”
