Penwith artist, Mark Spray does more than just exhibit his latest paintings and sketches; he provides a tantalizing insight into the inspiration and voluminous background behind each piece. His exhibitions at The Great Atlantic Galleries since 2007 have been heavily influenced by the poetry which he loves - from Ted Hughes (Earthbound 2007 & Prometheus - Dartmoor Tors - Weathering, 2009), Paul Auster (Unearth, 2008) to a host of poets (“I’ll invite the poets”, 2008). Mark’s new exhibition has some broader connections.

In Rare Earth, Plateau, and Strata there are feelings of nostalgia, of wonderment and of another literary connection between the landscapes of his childhood and of his current sojourn in West Cornwall. His Strata paintings continue from his fascination with geology and landscape, more explicit than before in this case, with locations along Britain’s southern, Jurassic Coast. The nostalgia comes from the Moorland Plateau landscapes which were familiar to him during childhood in Derbyshire and also reflect the abiding influence of English singer-songwriter David Sylvian on his work. The literary connection comes from the same Derbyshire landscapes which influenced D H Lawrence. And, here’s the interesting twist, Lawrence of course, was also influenced by the Penwith landscape during his stay at Zennor during the Great War.

Mark Spray’s 2010 collection of paintings and sketches are being exhibited at The Great Atlantic Bank Square Gallery in St Just-in-Penwith from September 25th and at The Great Atlantic Arwenack Street Gallery from October 23rd for two weeks.
