The Great Atlantic Church Street Gallery is pleased to present a new collection of paintings by Howard Coles.
Howard Coles RCA
Howard studies sculpture at Cardiff College of Art. While teaching in Singapore he allied his painting with printmaking to create the synthesis and economy of the literal underpinnings of his paintings which we see today.
Leaving the realms of pedagogy in 1991 he moved to the Lleyn Peninsula to paint from a landscape which has sustained his creative work over some twenty five years or more.
Working from his studio at Llanystumdwy his paintings and prints continue to be pulled and shaped by reaction and interpretation of a powerful landscape.
His paintings suggest reaction and response to, rather than any literal translation of, his subject. His technique infers some chanced upon occurrence or sensations deemed important enough to be committed to paper and canvas.
Earlier formative work in sculpture and printmaking can be seen in marks and gestures which gouge and re-surface each painting. Scored lines, wheal-like, create energy and form. Blacks are intense and blue synonymous with the liquid depths of the sea.
Any response to literal foundations of his subject is sometimes blatant and
face-on, at other times it barely registers as comment, but no painting is ever totally devoid of its landscape origins.
He has had numerous one man and group shoes and is represented by
galleries in the Principality, Scotland and Australia.
An academician of the Royal Cambrian Academy, he continues to show mainly within Wales, while national collections in Malaysia and Singapore hold his work with much being found in the hands of private individuals worldwide.
