The Great Atlantic Church Street Gallery is pleased to present a new collection of paintings by John Connolly.

Born in Leeds, 1954. John studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art before training as a Drama teacher at Doncaster and Derby. Since graduating in 1976, John has enjoyed a succesful career in ‘the arts’ dividing his time between, acting and writing and more recently painting. To balance the books, John also teaches Art in Derbyshire.

John sometimes describes himself as a ‘Derbyshire based, Cornish artist’ - an expression of frustration being a landlocked artist whose first love is to paint the sea. He is never reluctant to make a 700 mile round trip to Cornwall or South Wales to sketch and paint in his sketchbooks. Further developing the work back in his studio in Derbyshire.

“I have a keen interest in lansdcape painting. As I tour with Compact Theatre, with sketch book and camera I am able to tap into the rich variety of landscapes around Britain. The vast sweeping horizons of the Derbyshire Peak District, the rugged terrain and ever changing light over Saddleworth and North Yorkshire Moors and the shorlines of Pembrokeshire and Cornwall provide me with a rich variety of subject matter.”

In much of his current work, John is drawn towards the sea, Peak District and South Wales, making the point of interest the horizon where the contrasts of colour, texture and ever changing light over water enable him to create work with drama and emotion. John rarely includes people in his paintings hoping that the ‘observer’ can experience a feeling of remoteness and ‘sense of place’.

John’s work has been purchased by collectors in this country, France, America, Australia, New Zealand and The Middle East.
