Rachael Kantaris is a full-time painter and printmaker, living and working in St Ives. She is involved in the running of The Porthmeor Print Workshop, supplies her work to galleries throughout Britain, and teaches at various places including, The Tate Gallery, St Ives, and on the Fine Art Foundation Degree at Cornwall College.
She was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1967, and spent much of her childhood in Cornwall. After completing her B.A. and M.A. at Brighton, she travelled widely, and worked as artist in residence in studios in Berlin and Melbourne. In 1997 she was invited by The British Council to be the main exhibitor in a show of British Contemporary Printmaking which she took to Manila, and whilst there, taught a series of workshops at The University of the Philippines.
This is the first time she has shown her paintings and etchings alongside each other, and marks a recent departure into the language of paint. Although I have painted almost daily throughout my life, it has previously been in connection with etching and not as a means to an end. Having worked for years to create very painterly etchings, this progression has been both liberating and exciting. Although the process is very different, my concerns remain the same whichever medium I work in ...an ongoing fascination for colour, searching for a sense of movement, and exploring the surface and the space within the painting. In this series of paintings from the last eight months, I have used printed areas of texture combined with layers of paint built up and then rubbed back with a cloth or sand paper. This process of creating and unearthing an image is often a long journey and Im not sure where its going until I get there. Whether etching or painting, it seems that the process of making the work is as important as the final result.
