the penwith peninsula

Andrew Giddens Land’s End
19.5 x 39.5” 49.5 x 100cm oil on canvas

Early in November of last year I was returning to London on a flight from Miami. Just before 7.00am I was awoken by an announcement that we were approaching Land’s End. Raising the window blind I could make out the entire Penwith Peninsula, the coast etched darkly against the dawn-reflecting ocean, the lights of St Just, St Buryan, Penzance and other local places clearly discernable with Falmouth, Helston, Camborne and Redruth away ahead of us. Although quite dark, it was a wonderful sight, welcoming me back to the unique region that has been my home for almost 20 years.

The distinct, thumb-like extension of the South West Peninsula is the region of Cornwall known as Penwith - end of the land. This collection of paintings brings together a group of energetic artists currently working in this most popular part of Cornwall. Consisting mainly of hilly moorland skirted by ancient marine platforms, Penwith is famously edged by steep cliffs, rocky headlands and sandy beaches.

Each of the ten artists who have participated in this project highlight different aspects of the land, sea and sky; the valleys and hills; the fields, hedges and tracks. The image above shows Andrew Giddens’ wonderful representation of the Penwith Peninsula as seen from above, to the North. Most of the paintings in this collection relate to location within the area encompassed by Andrew’s painting.

John Brenton. Born to Cornish parents in 1964, John Brenton grew up near St. Austell. Ever since his first day at school, when his teacher congratulated him on a drawing he had made, he has worked to develop his creative talents. From St. Austell Sixth Form College, John progressed to an honours degree in Creative Arts from Alsager College - now part of Manchester University.

John returned to his artistic roots in 1999 with a significant exhibition of work at the then Bakehouse Gallery in Penzance. Within a short time he became a full time artist exhibiting at a growing number of Galleries.

Of his work, especially that which features the Cornish coastline, John says this: “Sea, sky, seashore and the magic play of light are, of course, the inspirational symbols of many painters, but I try for that extra dimension - the given moment. I begin my work at the spot that fires my interest and I work quickly to capture as much as is fleetingly possible”. After more work in his studio he will return to that particular place to make the important final touches.

He lives with his wife and two children at Sennen Cove, near Land’s End.

Andrew Giddens. Born in Dorset in 1976, Andrew Giddens moved to Cornwall in 1991. After attending Falmouth College of Art he continued his studies at The Arts Institute in Bournemouth.

Andrew's paintings focus on the coves, beaches, headlands and cliffs of his surroundings. Years of intimate study of the sea around the Lizard peninsula and his continuous relationship with the swells and tides, as a dedicated surfer, provides Andrew with an in-depth understanding of the raw essence of the Cornish coast. He lives in Praa Sands between Penzance and Helston.

Despite the strong and irrestible draw of the sea, Andrew's autumn 2004 exhibition at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery concentrated almost exclusively in locations arround the Helford Rover.

In the short space of time that Andrew has been exhibiting at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery there has been a tremendous response to his work. The excitement that greets his paintings and the anticipation of his first solo exhibition here, demonstrates that Andrew will undoubtedly go on to be one of Cornwall’s leading names in landscape painting.

He is an artist member of the Society of Illustrators in New York where he has exhibited, and he is a lecturer at Falmouth College of Art. June Miles was born in 1924 and spent the first six years of her life on an island near Hong Kong. She studied at The Slade and has had a fascination with still life throughout the majority of her painting career. She lives in St. Just with her husband, the sculptor and painter Paul Mount and The Great Atlantic has always been delighted to show June’s sensitive and beautiful, almost translucent still lives and landscape paintings.

Morwenna Morrison. After graduating from Exeter Art College, Morwenna Morrison travelled extensively then returned to settle in St. Just. Everyday she can be found walking the paths of West Penwith feeling a real affinity with the area. Working ‘plein air’ and in the studio she strives to capture the drama of ever changing light as it plays across the landscape. Her work shows equally an interest in the representation of what she sees and the application of paint.

Morwenna's work has become increasingly popular with clients of The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery.

Tom Rickman was born in the City of London in 1960. After studying, he lived and worked in West Dorset. During this time he used a beach hut as a studio, painting the light and changing atmosphere of Lyme Bay. Discovering the Cornish coast on a walking holiday in 1982 he realised a yearning to live and work close to a rugged and romantic coastline. Eventually, in 1992 he moved to West Penwith and fulfilled this dream - to sit on the edge of a vast ocean and paint its moods and splendour. Tom also works in the Scottish Highlands, Nantucket Island USA and Sicilly. Although an accomplished landscape painter he is drawn towards the simple minimalism of the subject of the sea and sky, making his point of interest the horizon, where these two elements are compressed. Tom Exhibits widely in the West Country, London and the USA. Tom was one of several "Great Atlantic" artists commissioned to supply work for the Cunard liner Queen Mary II in 2002. His work has been collected by, among others in the corporate world, Slaughter and May and Tesco plc.

Ros Salter. Ros Salter was born in West Cornwall and has lived there most of her life. She gave up teaching to concentrate on painting the coastal landscapes of Penwith and the Isles of Scilly and is now a full time painter working from a studio in Penzance.

“The laying down of colour in my paintings is obsessional and once this flows, familiar headland shapes and configurations of coastal stretches arise like spectres from a past memory”. The vibrant, near abstract landscapes of Ros Salter’s have been much admired since she first placed her work in The Great Atlantic in 2003.

Simon Stooks. Dorset born Simon is a graduate of Falmouth College of Art. He now lives and works near Falmouth, close to the fabled Helford River. His debut solo show at The Map Works Gallery in 2004 propelled Simon into being one of our most popular artists very quickly. Simon Stooks will exhibit at both our St. Just and Monmouth galleries in 2005 and it’s clear to see why his evocative, semi-abstract landscapes and seascapes have proved so popular. Simon’s work has been exhibited widely including The Mall Gallery, London, Chancery Lane, London, The Mayfield Gallery, Bournemouth and Beside the Wave in Falmouth.

Carrie Taylor. Carrie enjoyed a successful first solo exhibition at The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery in 2004 and her work has proved to be very much in demand. Carrie lives in St. Just-in-Penwith and her sensitive observations of hedgerows, brambles and other insights to her rural surroundings have meant she is fast becoming a popular addition to The Great Atlantic’s team of artists.

Typical of the way in which she applies herself to her art and enjoys a challenge, is the fact that Carrie Taylor will be staging a most impressive body of work with a common title - "Celtic Shades" - simultaneously at The Great Atlantic Map Works and Church Street, Monmouth Gallleries in the spring of 2005.
