June Hicks

June Hicks was born in Yorkshire, she taught history, married a farmer, and had three children - then became a printmaker by turning up at Penzance School of Art looking for a suitable class.

“‘Do you like drawing?’ I was asked. ‘Yes’, I replied. ‘Try etching then’ - and from day one I was hooked. It is a fascinating and maddening process: through lines and cross-hatching and aquatint, form, light and shade can be made to appear provided you concentrate fully at every stage. Carelessness is punished. An otherwise good print can be ruined because there is a crease in the backing paper on the press, for instance.

“Someone came in the studio once and asked me why go through all this rigmarole - why not just draw and paint? I tried to explain that there is always a subtle difference between a pen drawing (say) and a print and it is that elusive something which keeps me at it.”
