Jesse Leroy Smith
London born Jesse Leroy Smith was educated at East Ham Polytechnic, Norwich School of Art and The Royal Academy where he won a travel scholarship that enabled him to visit Greece and Turkey. His work was influenced by these visit and further travel to Norway, Ireland and Nepal. Jesse moved to Cornwall with his young family in 2001.
“Since having children I have been making a large body of drawings documenting the life of my family. The drawings reflect the fleeting and spontaneous nature of figures interacting and focus on the gestures that reveal an individual’s character. From these drawings I have been looking for images that convey the raw nature of a young person encountering their environment and the subtle states of being experienced. Through the underlying depth of feeling I have for my subject I am hoping to express the complex and symbiotic relationship of parenthood.”
