Affordable Art at the Cape

A major exhibition called Art at the Cape or, more accurately, Affordable Art at the Cape is set to open from Valentine ’s Day at The Cape Cornwall Golf and Leisure Resort in West Cornwall’s St Just-in-Penwith in conjunction with The Great Atlantic St Just Gallery

Set high on the cliffs above Priest’s Cove and overlooking the lofty Cape, the venue has stunning views out over the Western Approaches - a vista that has inspired artists for generations.

A collection of moderately priced paintings, prints, drawings and photographs by around thirty contemporary artists are being shown in the function room of the club. The work, not necessarily featuring the Cape will provide a cross-section of work from the energetic contemporary art scene that flourishes around St Just and West Cornwall today.

A selection of the work in this exhibition is shown on this web site CLICK HERE. Prices include delivery to any UK mainland address. Our money back guarantee applies to any purchase, p[provided we are informed within three days of a purchase being delivered to the customer.

If you are able to visit the exhibition, admission is free, there are plenty of parking spaces and as the exhibition opening hours run for 8.00am to 8.00pm, a visit could be combined with a walk along the cliffs, a dip in the club’s indoor heated swimming pool or even a round of golf!

Affordable art at The Cape will run from Valentine’s Day until Friday February 20th at Cape Cornwall Golf and Leisure Resort. Telephone 01736 788911 or e-mail gallery@greatatlantic.co.uk with any queries.

Something Old and Something New

The Great Atlantic Galleries in conjunction with St John’s School, Leatherhead, presented an exhibition of printed works by 20th century masters Marc Chagall (1887 - 1995), Eric Gill (1880 - 1942), David Hockney (1937 - ) and Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) with contemporary works by Jenny Grevatte, Catherine Harvey Jefferson*, Mark Spray and Lucy Toop.

*Catherine Harvey Jefferson conducted a master class with St John’s sixth form students during the morning of 17th October.

20th Century masters

We are fortunate that many of the giants of the 20th century art world were prolific print makers in their time, so whereas their original paintings are beyond the reach of most people, their printed works are very much more accessible. Marc Chagall, born in Russia but with France as his adopted country, has been described as one of the greatest religious painters of all time. The works on show at St John’s are lithographs from his 1956 and 1960 Bible Illustrations. Eric Gill, a controversial character sure enough, was a supremely talented sculptor, typographer and wood engraver whose exquisite prints bring lasting pleasure. Those on show come from his Cleverdon and Faber book editions from 1929 and 1935. David Hockney, born in 1937, still strides the art world as one of the most talented artists of his generation. Work from two early suites in the 1960’s are shown here - illustrations from “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” and “The Blue Guitar”. Henri Matisse was a French artist, noted for his use of colour and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship. As a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century.

Contemporary artists

Jenny Grevatte is a modern contemporary painter based in Leicestershire and West Cornwall. She had her first exhibition in London’s Cork Street at an early age back in 1980 and has been an active exhibitor ever since. Her colourful oil and mixed media paintings of harbours, coves and more subtle aspects of the countryside hold much more than meets the eye as close
inspection will reveal! Catherine Harvey Jefferson comes from a long line of Cornish artists and is now living back in the county following a lengthy sojourn in the Home Counties. Her loose, abstract oils and brooding etchings have a growing following and, like each of the other contemporary paintings showing at this venue, is “one to watch”. Mark Spray’s serious and
compelling insights into the more profound aspects of the Cornish landscape around him represents the more serious face of modern painting at the moment. Watch out for more striking work from this Land’s End based artist. Lucy Toop is a young and energetic newcomer to the contemporary scene in Cornish art. Over the past year, Lucy has sold every painting that she painted and from a quiet but focused launch platform, can look forward to a long and upwardly evolving career.
