richard stanley
west penwith - a homage to colour

Although born in Nottingham in 1983, artist and illustrator, Richard Stanley has spent most his life in Devon and Cornwall. He spent much of his childhood and youth drawing and painting the landscapes of North Devon and his attention in recent years has been drawn to the colour, rawness and diversity of West Penwith.

This love affair with the Wild West began during his undergraduate days at Falmouth College of Art, where he studied and excelled in Illustration. Now, his work as a successful professional illustrator, allows Stanley to indulge in his passion for painting the landscapes of Penwith and the Isles of Scilly.

In his most recent collection of paintings, Stanley has once again been inspired by the magnificent, contrasting region of the Land’s End peninsula. The new work in oil and mixed media on paper, draws on his continued relationship of discovering and familiarity with the landscape that captivates him artistically, intellectually and emotionally.

“Colour has always played a significant role in my work; the new collection embraces and pays homage to colour as a representation of the fauna and flora, light and weather. A balance between representation and abstraction,” says Stanley.

Richard Stanley’s “West Penwith – a homage to colour” will be presented by The Great Atlantic Bank Square Gallery, appropriately in St Just – the very essence, if not the heart and soul of Penwith from March 6th – 25th.
