A unique exhibition of historic and contemporary art presented by The Great Atlantic Map Works Gallery in association with Falmouth Arts Centre.

Falmouth Arts Centre own in trust a large number of original works by the Newlyn School artist Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929).

The centre has embarked on a programme of restoring and stabilising an increasing number of the original works and making these available for exhibition at Falmouth and in museums and galleries around the world.

To celebrate the initial phase of this programme, Falmouth Arts Centre invited leading Cornish art gallery, The Great Atlantic Map Works of St Just-in-Penwith to arrange a major exhibition of works by contemporary artists who are active on the modern Cornwall arts scene. The idea behind the project is to present some of the best work from contemporary artists alongside a number of newly restored Henry Scott Tuke paintings, most of which may never have been exhibited before.

Twenty three contemporary artists who live in, work in, or at least, are strongly associated with Cornwall, accepted invitations to exhibit their work in this presentation. They represent a range of artists whose work encompasses much of what has made the Cornish arts scene so flourishing and relatively prosperous in recent years. And in particular, they represent the fruits of all the inspiration and confidence that flowed from Henry Scott Tuke and his fellow members of the so-called Newlyn School to the long lasting benefit of artists from generations to come.

Here comes the sun is the title chosen for this exhibition, since much of Tuke’s work and that of the contemporary artists was or has been inspired by the sun and quality of light that blesses these and other parts of the world. Many of the contemporary artists represented here are exhibiting work from ‘distant parts’ as well as some of their work that has originated in Cornwall.

‘Here comes the sun’ opened to the public at the Falmouth Arts Centre on Tuesday 30th September 2003. The final day was Tuesday 7th October. From Falmouth the exhibition (sadly without the original Tuke paintings but with some prints of selected works) began a nation-wide tour visiting Reed’s School, Cobham, Surrey (October 10-12th) then moving to Sutton Valence, Kent and Wimborne, Dorset in November, Worcester in December and Monmouth in January 2004.
