HENRY SCOTT TUKE R.A. R.S.W. (1858 - 1929)

Henry Scott Tuke was born in York in 1858, into a family with strong Quaker beliefs. Soon after his birth the family moved to Falmouth, then in 1874 to London, where after much discussion it was decided that Henry should study at the Slade School of Art. Here he won a number of prizes, including the Slade Scholarship, and met T. C. Gotch who became a lifelong friend.

In 1883 Tuke moved to Newlyn, joining a small colony of artists including Gotch and Walter Langley. He then moved to Falmouth, which became his home for the rest of his life, and bought an old brigantine, the ‘Julie de Nantes’, which for many years formed a floating studio.

Tuke’s work originally included many large narrative paintings, but these were never very successful, and he began to concentrate on the effects of light on flesh and water. His reputation and success grew, and he was able to travel abroad, painting in St. Tropez, Genoa, Belize and the West Indies. In 1900 a banquet was held in his honour at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society - now the Falmouth Arts Centre.

Tuke died on March 13th, 1929; his last diary entry read “All stopping in, dark and grey”. What a contrast to Here Comes The Sun!
