jon thompson

Jon was born and raised in Shropshire where he now resides once again and it is no real surprise that natural history has played such a big part in his work. He particularly strives to embody the qualities of space, light and movement and most importantly the interplay between the weather and the landscape in his work.

“Attempting to lock the world on my canvas with paint fills me with frustration. I cannot seem to satisfy myself with the view in front of me. I am continuously aware of my whole surroundings. This awareness affects my rendering of the vista, more often than not I prefer to work from direct exposure to the land that excites and inspires me, particularly if the weather is bad! Spume and froth, scudding cloud, driven snow, leaf stripped from tree, these are the days I love.”

Jon tries to paint generously and without hesitation and as such he tries hard not to lose the first impression, wanting his work to show confidence without losing the intimacy and fragility of the landscape he explores.

Jon has exhibited widely throughout the UK and his pictures can be found in many collections even as far a field as New Zealand. His most recent exhibitions include group and solo exhibitions with the The Great Atlantic Galleries, Chelsea Old Town Hall - May 2009, further exhibitions for 2009 include Bath Fine Art and The Albany Gallery Cardiff.
